Uber, Lyft and DoorDash drivers are striking on February 14

It could be a challenge hailing a ride from certain airports on Valentine's Day this year. Thousands of rideshare and delivery drivers for Uber, Lyft and DoorDash are planning to hold a demonstration on February 14 to demand fair pay and better security measures, according to Reuters. The strike was announced last week by Justice for App Workers, a coalition representing more than 100,000 rideshare and delivery drivers across the US.

Based on the group's page for the rally, workers participating in the demonstration won't be taking rides to and from any airport in Austin, Chicago, Hartford, Miami, Newark, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Rhode Island and Tampa. The coalition is asking drivers to join the event and "demand changes from Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and all the app companies profiting off of [their] hard work." Meanwhile, Rideshare Drivers United, an independent union for Uber and Lyft drivers in Los Angeles, also revealed that its members are turning off their apps on February 14 to protest "the significant decrease in pay [they've] all felt this winter."

While the strikes could see the participation of tens of thousands of workers, Uber believes it won't have an impact on its business since only a small portion of its drivers typically take part in demonstrations. The company told The Hill and CBS News that a similar protest last year didn't affect its operations and that its driver earnings remain "strong." In the fourth quarter of 2023, "drivers in the US were making about $ 33 per utilized hour," the spokesperson said.

The groups announced the strikes just a few days after Lyft promised guaranteed weekly earnings for its drivers in the country, ensuring that they'll make at least 70 percent of what their riders had paid. DoorDash didn't respond to the publications' requests for comment, but it currently pays its drivers $ 29.93 for every active hour in states with minimum wage requirements for app-based delivery workers. It recently introduced new fees for customers in New York City and Seattle as a response to their new minimum wage regulations.

‘Kerbal Space Program 2’ finally arrives on February 24th

It’s nearly three years late, but Kerbal Space Program 2 is almost here, provided you don’t mind a few rough edges. Private Division has revealed that the sequel to its rocket construction game will be available on February 24th as an Early Access release through Steam, the Epic Games Store and other online shops. The new title includes a raft of content and feature updates, but its biggest improvement may be ease of use — this could be worth a look if you were put off by the learning curve of the original.

KSP2 includes “fully revamped” vehicle assembly and flight interfaces that, according to the developers, are more accommodating for rookies without taking away the challenge. Newcomers also see tutorial animations. Add a new maneuver planner and a more usable time warp (it’s now an option while accelerating) and the game should be less intimidating, not to mention less monotonous during long journeys.

Whatever your skill level, the scope will be much larger. The initial release will include new environments with more detailed atmospheres and terrain, as well as new spaceflight tech with customizable parts. Later on, you’ll see much more. KSP2 will finally add interstellar travel, and you can build colonies with habitats and space stations. Multiplayer is also on the roadmap for friends who want to either cooperate on space exploration or one-up each other’s achievements.

The new game will only be available on PCs during Early Access, and it’s not certain just when the finished release will be ready. The first Kerbal Space Program took four years to exit its pre-release phase, so you might be in for a long(er) wait if you’re a console fan or just want a polished product.

Huawei rolls out February security update for the Mate 8

Huawei_Mate8 (2)

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has been making good on its promise to distribute Google’s monthly security updates for its flagship smartphones, and today has started rolling out February’s patches for the Mate 8. This upgrade’s objective is to fix a multitude of “critical bugs” present in the open-source operating system, which, if not dealt with, could have permitted devices to be remotely accessed by a simple text message. It also addresses users concerns regarding privilege escalation as it plasters over any previous holes exposing the resources that had the facility to brick a handset if tampered with.

As usual, the update is being distributed in stages. All unlocked Mate 8 units should receive the update within the next few days, whilst carrier-branded variants are expected to get it sometime next week — so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that push notification prompting you to download and install the update. It’s worth noting, however, as this is a relatively large piece of firmware,  you’ll probably want to connect to a Wi-Fi network prior to pulling it from the servers in order to ensure you don’t run over your data allotment and rack up a nasty bill with your service provider.

Samsung will show the world the Galaxy S7 on February 21

samsung_mwc_2016_invite

We’ve finally received confirmation from Samsung that the Galaxy S7 will debut next month at MWC 2016, just as Evan Blass revealed yesterday.

Invites are out and a teaser is teasing. Samsung will show the world its newest hardware, led by its flagship phone, on February 21 at 1:00 PM ET.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Tonight, the company posted a teaser online to give the world an idea of what’s to come at its next Unpacked event. The video shows a man putting on a Gear VR headset and reaching out into the virtual reality-based world in front of him. The environment he’s immersed in is a dark room with a box containing the next flagship phone from Samsung. So the teaser hints that we’ll get both a new phone and an advanced virtual reality headset at MWC 2016.

The teaser pushed out alongside the press invites tonight is likely not the only one we’ll see in the weeks leading up to the launch date. Samsung will want to get everyone thinking and perhaps tease other new devices as well.
