Google’s latest Pixel 6 and 6 Pro update fixes weak haptic feedback for notifications
Google’s recent Pixel software updates haven’t always landed flawlessly. At the end of last year, for instance, the company was forced to pause the release of an OTA after reports that the software caused the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro to drop calls. More recently, the March update introduced an issue that left the company’s latest phones producing much weaker notifications when you got a notification. Many Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners complained after Google released the update, noting that no matter what they set their phone’s haptic feedback to, they would miss calls and emails because they couldn’t feel their device vibrating.

On Monday, Google began rolling out the May Pixel software update. It includes a fix for the vibration issue. “Improvements for haptic feedback under certain conditions and uses cases,” the company writes on its community website. The update resolves two other issues that affect all recent Pixels devices. The first involves a bug that had caused those phones to wake their displays without any input. The second solves a problem that could crash the Pixel launcher after you restarted your device. The update also includes the latest Android security patch from Google.
According to Google, it will roll out the May 2022 update to all eligible Pixel devices in the coming weeks. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can attempt to install the software on your phone by manually sideloading it. Just note that flashing a device always comes with a degree of risk.

Instagram is testing in-app notifications for service outages
One week after a massive Facebook outage that took all of the social network’s apps offline for more than six hours, Instagram says it’s testing notifications that will alert users to “temporary issues” like outages or other technical issues.
The new alerts would appear in users’ Activity Feed, alongside other in-app notifications. The messages could be used to let users know about specific issues, like Story uploads not working, or a more widespread problem, like the two outages last week. Importantly, Instagram says it doesn’t plan to alert users to every issue, but ones that may be a source of widespread confusion.
“We won’t send a notification every single time there is an outage, but when we see that people are confused and looking for answers, we’ll determine if something like this could help make things clearer,” Instagram wrote in a blog post. The company added that it’s testing the feature in the US “for the next few months.”
Separately, Instagram also showed off a new “account status” section of its app, which is meant to alert users to “what's going on with your account” more generally. Instagram says it’s starting with notifications about posts that are removed and when an account “is at risk of being disabled” due to rule violations.
According to Instagram, the feature is meant to make it easier for users to understand why a post may have been removed, and whether or not they may be in danger of losing an account altogether. While the app has notified users in the past when a post is labeled or removed, the company hasn’t always done a good job letting people know which policy they violated. The Oversight Board has repeatedly told Facebook it needs to do a better job at explaining rules to users, and account status could help them do just that.
Account status could also help the app address a more Instagram-specific issue: concerns over “shadowbanning.” Instagram says that “in the coming months” it plans to update account status to let people know “how their content is being distributed and recommended across different parts of Instagram.”

Microsoft may add access to Android notifications in Windows 10
During their Build 2016 event in San Francisco, Microsoft has revealed some plans that will make Windows 10 play nicer and be a little more useful for Android smartphone users. Microsoft’s developers are looking at enabling desktop access to notifications received on Android phones. The support may even extend to being able to reply to notifications.
In a world where users frequently interact with multiple screens, having the same information available on any given device can be a big boon to productivity. This is one of the driving factors in the growth of the “cloud” which separates data and services from specific devices. A big challenge for many users though are notifications received on their smartphones, especially given the temporary nature of them. This challenge is driving developers to figure out a solution, although these frequently involve only a subset of the notifications a user may receive, like accessing text messages on a PC.
To broaden the capability to have notifications available and accessible on a computer, Microsoft is tapping into the Cortana app for Android. Microsoft appears to be working on a means for Cortana to build up a list of notifications received on a device, upload this to a cloud server, and then have a Windows 10 based PC using the desktop Cortana app access that same list to get things synced up.
If Microsoft can get the permissions and speed of syncing sorted out, the desktop Cortana could effectively become an extension of an Android device. This would enable users to do things like dismiss notifications from the desktop or reply to notifications.
Sources believe the same capability will be built out for Windows 10 Mobile devices. However, iOS device users will likely be left out in the cold given the restrictions of that platform. Indications are this new notification support may be available as soon as this summer when Microsoft is expected to release a major update to Windows 10.
