A New Way for Artists to Sell Tickets and Update Fans About Upcoming Shows

Cross-posted from the YouTube Artist Blog

At YouTube, we understand the importance of helping artists find ways to build deeper connections with their fans — the ones who not only watch and listen to videos, but are also willing to pay to see live performances. And, with live concerts becoming a bigger driver of revenue for artists, we want to help artists reach those fans, keep them updated about upcoming shows, and sell more tickets.

We’ve been experimenting with ways we can offer a ticketing experience to fans and we’re excited to announce our first ticketing partnership with Ticketmaster. Starting today, we will begin featuring hundreds of artist’s upcoming U.S. tour dates on their YouTube videos. Fans enjoying an artist’s official music video on YouTube can now learn about upcoming concert listings and with a simple click, go to Ticketmaster to purchase tickets.

YouTube’s massive fan base paired with Ticketmaster’s global roster of concerts and security of verified tickets means we can easily connect a fan’s discovery of music on YouTube to their ability to purchase concert tickets.

We’re just getting started. We’ll be rolling out this feature to all artists who have Ticketmaster shows in North America with plans to expand globally. And, as part of our ongoing commitment to support artists, we’ll continue to find additional ways to make meaningful fan and artist connections.

Updates from VidCon: more users, more products, more shows and much more

I just got off stage after a great conversation with Rhett and Link at VidCon, where we announced a number of exciting new updates. We spoke about VR, YouTube TV, new original series and a number of improvements to the core YouTube experience. Let’s talk about that!

  • An update on our viewers: A question I get all the time is “How many people actually watch YouTube?” Today, I’m pleased to announce that we crossed a big threshold: 1.5 billion logged in viewers visit YouTube every single month. That’s the equivalent of one in every five people around the world! And how much do those people watch? On average, our viewers spend over an hour a day watching YouTube on mobile devices alone.
  • Making VR for everyone: I also spoke about how we want to make VR more accessible and more affordable for viewers and creators. The reality is, filming 360-degree VR videos isn’t easy for most creators and some VR cameras are expensive. That’s why I’m thrilled that YouTube and Daydream have worked together on a new format, VR180, and new cameras, which make it easy and affordable for anyone to make VR videos. This format delivers 3-D video while capturing 180-degrees around you. Creators only have to worry about recording what’s in front of them while viewers get an awesome, immersive experience with a VR headset, or a video that looks just as great on a phone as any other video. Best of all, we’re working with camera manufacturers like LG, Yi and Lenovo to build new VR180 cameras for as little as a couple hundred dollars—comparable to what you’d pay for a point-and-shoot.

  • A new look for our app and desktop site: We want to make sure YouTube gives you the best experience when it comes to creating and watching videos. Perhaps our most important job is to show off your videos in the best possible way, no matter what format you choose to shoot them in. Who cares if they’re vertical or horizontal? Shot on a mobile phone or DSLR? Square, 4:3 or 16:9?
In the coming weeks, the YouTube mobile app will dynamically adapt to whatever size you choose to watch it in. That means if you’re watching a vertical, square or horizontal video, the YouTube player will seamlessly adapt itself, filling the screen exactly the way they should.
We want things to look just as good on your desktop, too. Last month, we opened up a preview of a new desktop experience. The new design is clean and fresh, and it has new features, such as a super cool Dark Theme that gives videos more of a cinematic look.
flexy-demo-fullres.gif
  • Sharing is caring: We’re making it a whole lot easier for you to share your favorite YouTube videos with friends. Last year, we announced a new sharing feature that lets you share videos right from the YouTube app. In a couple weeks, it’ll be available in Latin America and then throughout the U.S. soon after that.

  • More markets for YouTube TV: We are really excited about YouTube TV and pleased that it will be expanding to ten more markets in just a couple of weeks, including: Dallas-Fort Worth, Washington, D.C., Houston, Atlanta, Phoenix, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne and Charlotte. YouTube TV was built for the YouTube generation that loves live TV but wants it delivered in a way that suits their mobile and flexible lifestyles. In fact, we see more Millennials using YouTube TV than any other generational group. Now – with this expansion – millions more people will be able to stream their favorite live sports and must-see shows from top broadcast and cable networks. Sign up to find out when we launch in your market.
  • New slate of YouTube Red Originals: To date, we’ve launched 37 original series and movies on YouTube Red, and they’ve generated nearly a quarter billion views. We are excited about working with our partners to help them create incredible content that delights their fans. Today, we shared details on 12 new projects coming to YouTube Red—here’s the preview: Watch the latest shows from YouTube’s biggest stars

I always have an incredible time at VidCon and this year is no different. I met amazing fans and inspirational creators and I experienced, first-hand, the wonderful sense of community and belonging between them. I hope some of these features and announcements will make their YouTube experience—and yours—better than ever.

From the Brandcast stage: New star-studded shows for audiences around the globe

Kevin Hart. Rhett and Link. Ellen DeGeneres. Katy Perry. The Slow Mo Guys. Demi Lovato. Ludacris.

These amazing stars all have something in common: They’re starring in new shows premiering exclusively on YouTube. And since these shows are ad-supported, you—and every single one of our billion-plus viewers—can watch for free.

Bringing even more can’t-miss content to audiences globally

For years, we’ve been proud to work with creators like Casey Neistat, Jackie Aina and countless others who have turned their channels into daily destinations. And with these channels packaged within Google Preferred—our offering that allows brands to advertise on some of the most-loved and most-watched content on YouTube—brands have been able to support the videos you love, so you can enjoy for free.

These channels continue to be hugely successful. That’s why, starting in 2016, we made the decision to take YouTube to the next level. We began making premium original content for our subscription service, YouTube Red, releasing 30 series and movies in just over a year. And we kept hearing from brands they wanted to be more involved in these premium series.

Launching new ad-supported shows, exclusively on YouTube

When excited fans, brands, and creators tell us something, we listen. We’re thrilled to announce that beginning later this year, some of the biggest YouTube creators and Hollywood names will be featured in seven new series on YouTube—bringing more can’t-get-enough-of and can’t-find-anywhere-else shows to everyone, everywhere. With these new shows, brands can be a part of content that’s generating buzz around the world.

Check out the must-see lineup:

  • Ellen’s Show Me More Show: Like nothing Ellen has done before, Ellen’s Show Me More Show is a twice-a-week series built just for YouTube, giving fans behind the scenes access to some of the biggest stars and her favorite moments.
  • Good Mythical Morning: Worldwide YouTube superstars—and hosts of YouTube’s most popular daily show—Rhett & Link will go to new heights in a long-form expansion of Good Mythical Morning, giving fans even more of what they crave: larger-than-life stunts, zanier challenges, and over-the-top laughs.
  • Kevin Hart: What the Fit?: Kevin will team up with celebrity friends and YouTube stars each week as they attempt to master a different trending, grueling and sometimes ridiculous workout routine.
  • I Am: Demi Lovato: Global music sensation and social advocate, Demi Lovato reveals a yearlong personal journey of music reinvention and deep discovery as she dives into the writing and recording of her new album in her new series, I Am: Demi Lovato.
  • Best.Cover.Ever.: From Ryan Seacrest Productions and Endemol Shine North America, Best.Cover.Ever. is a cutting-edge talent competition series hosted by Ludacris where emerging talent from across the globe submit covers to YouTube to vie for the ultimate prize: an opportunity to perform a duet with a superstar artist. Submit your cover now at thebestcoverever.com.
  • The Super Slow Show: YouTube stars The Slow Mo Guys will test the latest in technology to reinvent the way we look at celebrities, music, pranks, comedy sketches and more, giving a one-of-a-kind glimpse into what the world looks like in slow motion.
  • Katy Perry Live Special: It’s real. It’s raw. It’s Katy Perry. Live on YouTube, The Katy Perry Live Special will take you inside of her world, revealing the experiences and emotions she poured into her all-new soul-baring music on the eve of her highly anticipated album launch. With unique access, global reach and surprise fun packed along the way, Katy will break it all down in this album listen-along, and if you stick around long enough, there might just be fireworks.

We’re excited to partner with top creators and world-class production companies to offer these new shows to audiences globally—on the platform where the world chooses to watch over a billion hours of video every day.1 People turn to YouTube to express themselves, engage with creators, and connect with the thriving communities they’re proud to be a part of.

This vibrant fan and creator community is also why brands turn to YouTube. And we’re excited that Johnson & Johnson Consumer Brands will be our first advertising partner of this new content. In addition to a major investment in our creators through Google Preferred, they’ve signed on as the exclusive sponsor of Best.Cover.Ever., helping to make the talent competition accessible to YouTube viewers.

Another great slate of shows and movies coming from top creators to YouTube Red

If we ask our creators, most of them will tell you that there’s a project, an idea, a collaboration, or a vision that they’ve always wanted to bring to life. YouTube has helped them achieve incredible things—build a fanbase, gain exposure, even earn serious money—but sometimes, they dream of something more.

Late last year we launched YouTube Red Originals for exactly that reason. We wanted to help our creators realize their ambitions on the platform where their community already lives.

With nine projects launched so far—including “Scare PewDiePie,” “Foursome” and “MatPat’s Game Lab” —we’re seeing fans sign up, tune in, binge and share their enthusiasm with their friends. Our original series and movies are one of the leading drivers of YouTube Red subscriptions, with viewership that rivals similar cable shows.

We’re also seeing creators featured in YouTube Red Originals get a boost in subscribers and watchtime on their main channels, with most of this watchtime coming from viewers who haven’t watched that creator’s content before. It turns out that there’s a virtuous cycle from YouTube Red that actually supports their existing channel on YouTube.

We’re also seeing fans consume these series and films in unexpected ways. Over half of the time spent watching Red Originals is happening on people’s mobile phones. Maybe that’s why the social buzz around YouTube Red Originals is so large. “A Trip to Unicorn Island” earned more Twitter mentions and impressions at launch than “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “House of Cards” and “True Detective” saw when they were released.

Based on the success we’ve seen so far, we’re thrilled to announce our latest slate of YouTube Red Originals.

RENEWALS:
“SCARE PEWDIEPIE” – SEASON 2: Produced by Maker Studios, the creator and executive producers of “The Walking Dead” franchise from Skybound Entertainment, and Felix Kjellberg under the Revelmode banner, the second season of the reality adventure series, “Scare PewDiePie,” promises even more thrills and chills.

“FOURSOME” – SEASON 2: Produced by AwesomenessTV, the second season of “Foursome” returns to YouTube Red following Andie’s adventures in the high school dating world. We meet a brand new Andie, a new era of extracurricular hooking up and high school awkwardness.

UNTITLED SMOSH MOVIE: After releasing the episodic series “Part Timers” on YouTube, Smosh is coming back for a feature-length comedy on YouTube Red. Luckless Charlie (Anthony Padilla) moves into a new apartment, only to find he has a roommate: a self-centered ghost named Max (Ian Hecox). Max makes Charlie’s life a living hell, until they learn that the only way Max can get into heaven is by working together.

NEW TO YOUTUBE RED:
“STEP UP” SERIES: “Step Up,” a fan favorite dance film franchise that launched the career of Channing Tatum, transitions to a new series with a heart-pounding, sexy, music-filled and dramatic look at dancers in a contemporary performing arts school. Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Meredith Milton, all producers of the original “Step Up” films, will executive produce the series, along with Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum, who both co-starred in the original “Step Up” film.

“RHETT & LINK’S BUDDY SYSTEM”: In this new scripted comedy series, Rhett & Link must go out of their way to regain control of their internet empire from their mutual co-ex-girlfriend who is now an evil Infomercial Queen holding a very big secret over their heads. The series also features “Saturday Night Live” alums Molly Shannon and Chris Parnell, as well as Leslie Bibb and Page Kennedy.

DAN & PHIL TOUR DOCUMENTARY: Top YouTube comedy stars, Dan Howell and Phil Lester are taking their fans inside their latest world tour, “The Amazing Tour Is Not On Fire.” With hilarious anecdotes, sketches, and lots of surprises for their fans, we’re bringing Dan and Phil’s successful live stage show exclusively to YouTube Red. They’ll also be giving audiences a behind-the-scenes look with a documentary about the making of the tour.

“VLOGUMENTARY”: Executive produced by award-winning filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, Maker Studios, and Shay “ShayCarl” Butler, “Vlogumentary” provides a personal, intimate lens into the world of some of YouTube’s biggest creators and demonstrates the power of the platform in shaping the lives of creative voices, their audiences and the media landscape.

UNTITLED ANIMATED SERIES: 3BLACKDOT and its top YouTube creators SeaNanners, TheMrSark and VanossGaming star in an animated comedy series, helmed by Michael Rowe, Emmy Award-winning writer of “Futurama” and “Family Guy,” about a team of ill-equipped paranormal investigators who struggle to unfold the mysteries of the paranormal universe for their desperate clients.

UNTITLED MICHAEL STEVENS PROJECT: In this new educational series, Vsauce creator Michael Stevens will take a deeper look into the human mind, using real subjects, including himself and special guests, to show some of the most mind-blowing, important and least understood aspects of human nature.

Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content, recently watched the first episode of “Escape the Night with Joey Graceffa.”

Huawei P9 Lite shows up on Romanian retailer’s website

huawei_logo001-780x447

The Huawei P9 Lite hasn’t been officially announced just yet, but it’s already showing up as for sale from a retailer in Europe.

That retailer is Cel.ro, a Romanian-based website. The website shows the Huawei P9 Lite as available in Gold, Black, and White color variants, all sitting at around USD$ 300. We’re not sure if you can actually go through the payment process on the website, or if they’ll actually even ship it to you right away, as it’s entirely possible this is just an “early” pre-order. Then again, Cel.ro lists the Huawei P9 Lite as in stock.

Huawei-P9-Lite-products

Either way, we still haven’t heard anything official, but according to the retailer, the specs on the handset are still quite nice. Featuring a 5.2-inch IPS Full HD display, a HiSilicon Kirin 650 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. The specs are interestingly a tad different than what Huawei announced in Russia not too long ago.

As far as camera optics go, you can expect to see a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front camera, dual-SIM functionality, 4G LTE connectivity, and a fingerprint scanner. You, of course, also have Huawei’s EMUI atop of Android 6.0.

Whatever the case, it seems like the P9 Lite is available in Romania through Cel.ro. We’re not sure as to when the Huawei P9 Lite will be available from other retailers in the region. Huawei did reveal that the P9 Lite would be available in Russia in June, so it could be some time before we hear anymore details.

Meanwhile, Huawei officially took the covers off of its P9 and P9 Plus not too long ago.

We’ll have to just sit and wait for an official word from Huawei before we can get some solid details. If the launch in Russia is anything to go by, we could be waiting a couple months before we hear anything else.

Are you looking forward to the P9 Lite?

The LG G5 shows up in a leaked photo (again)

lg g5 profileRemember that photo of the front and back of the G5 that we saw yesterday? Want another look at the device before its official announcement? You’re in luck.

Evan Blass has released yet another photo of the device, front and back, showing what’s probably the always on display and the rear camera module and fingerprint scanner. It doesn’t reveal anything new, but it does give a great look at the fantastically sleek design that LG is going with for their 2016 flagship. Even if you miss the volume buttons on the rear, it’s hard to argue that this isn’t one of the most attractive designs LG has come up with in recent years.

Fortunately, we aren’t too far out from the actual announcement of the device. There isn’t much left for LG to shock anyone with, but it’ll be nice to get some high quality images and complete clarification on what the G5 can and can’t do.

More renders of the Galaxy S7 Edge leak, shows off all three colors

galaxy s7 edge renderYep, we have more renders of the Galaxy S7 Edge. There’s really not much more to hide at this point, as we’ve seen images showing off the curved sides of the device and nearly every detail about the phone and its smaller sibling have been leaked at this point.

These renders do give a pretty good indication of the colors we can expect to see Samsung unveil this time around. We have the titanium silver that’s been popular on some of the company’s international models, as well as the solid black (no more blue-ish tint!) and the champagne gold that’s becoming increasingly popular. Everything else is in line with what we’ve seen, including the softer curves and stark resemblance of last year’s Galaxy S6.

Do any of these colors have you ready to throw down some cash on a pre-order later this month? Personally, I’m a big fan of white/silver phones, but the titanium gray might be a nice replacement if Samsung decides to drop a totally plain white phone this time around.

This Xiaomi Mi 5 render shows the handset with a real home button

xiaomi_logo

The opportunity came and went for Xiaomi to announce the Mi 5 at its November 24 event, but the company did use that date to launch the Mi Pad 2 and Redmi Note 3. Among the ‘special’ features being rumored for the handset is a technology not unlike Apple’s 3D Touch. The technology, known elsewhere as Force Touch, utilizes a pressure-sensitive display for extended long-presses. But, today, what’s below the display is what’s being talked about around the world.

xiaomi_mi_5_leaked_render_120815

A leaked render of the device obtained by GizmoChina shows that Xiaomi could be implementing a physical home button just below the display of the Mi 5. Most, if not all, Xiaomi handsets have capacitive buttons for Back, Home, and Recents; however, that is not the case here. The likely explanation for this is that Xiaomi is using a fingerprint scanner that is located on the front of the Mi 5 rather than the back.

Specifications for the handset allegedly include a 5.2-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, and 21MP / 8MP cameras. The Mi 5 should ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow; however, Xiaomi is undoubtedly going to put its MIUI 7 overlay on Google’s software.

It is believed that the Mi 5 will be debuting on January 21 with availability starting the next month.

DROID Turbo 2 leak shows overkill Verizon branding on the front of the device

turbo-2-and-maxx-leak

The upcoming DROID Turbo 2 has been subject to a variety of leaks, giving us all sorts of details–shatterproof display, massive battery, and so on–before the unveiling in a couple of days. This next leak shows just how outrageous the branding is going to be on this device, as we have become accustom to on DROID products.

Pictured above is a gallery of devices. The first three units are the allegedly the DROID Turbo 2, and the following two are the DROID MAXX.

For some reason, on the DROID Turbo 2, Verizon has decided to slap its signature check mark logo at the base device between two split speakers. This is, of course, not the first time Verizon has gone with this in-your-face branding. It was subject to the Galaxy S4 Mini years ago as well:

Galaxy-S4-Mini

There was quite a bit of outrage surrounding this branding on the Galaxy S4 Mini way back when, and we haven’t really seen it since, until now.

Keep in mind that leaks like these aren’t always accurate, so it’s wise to take it with a grain of salt. However, the leakster, Evan Blass, is a credible source and has been right in the past, making us think this could very possibly be the final device. It’s also very similar to the image Verizon leaked just yesterday.

What do you think of Big Red’s giant check mark on the DROID Turbo 2? Is it overkill?

Asus shows off 4:3 aspect ratio in leaked ZenPad press renders

zenpad

Asus is expected to unveil its new ZenPad series tablets at Computex next week, which will feature 4:3 aspect ratio screens and Intel chips.

While the bezels are a bit big, the tablet above does have front-facing speakers, which should do some good as far as sound quality goes.

Also expect a power button below the right-side volume rocker, a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the top, and perhaps a microSD slot on the right side as well.

7-inch and 8-inch models are expected to be released, both with Intel processors and two different storage sizes. The 8-incher will have a 2048 x 1536 screen, and the 7-incher will have a 1024 x 600 screen. Expect more information on the devices next week at Computex.
