T-Mobile announces expansion of Music Freedom and Binge On

T-Mobile Times Square store opening, Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016.

T-Mobile is expanding their Music Freedom and Binge On products with new services and in the process, T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere has some pointed words for the competition. Music Freedom and Binge On are T-Mobile’s solutions for streaming music and video, respectively, that does not count against a user’s data limits. With the addition of new content providers today, T-Mobile now has over 100 services that are streaming across their wireless network without counting against user’s data.

Even though T-Mobile may not be counting music and video streaming over these services against user plans, they still track the traffic. According to T-Mobile and Legere, customers have streamed 90 billion songs, over 190 million hours of video, and a combined 350 petabytes of high-speed data thanks to Music Freedom and Binge On.

On the Music Freedom service, T-Mobile is adding Amazon Music, Chilltrax, ESPN Radio, OHIO.FM, PreDanz and Uforia to the list of eligible services. This brings the total number of services over 40 and according to T-Mobile, covers 96% of all music streamed over the network. Binge On gets several new additions including Dailymotion, EPIS, OVGuide, OWNZONES, Viki, YipTV, 120 Sports, Nickelodeon, Spike TV and TV Land, bringing the total number of video services to over 60 covering more than 70% of video traffic on the T-Mobile network.

Legere, in a video released in conjunction with this announcement, also addressed competitors like Verizon and AT&T. In particular, he spoke about data that gets carried over from month to month if unused. Legere points out that T-Mobile gives users a year to make use of that data while the competition only provides one or two months before recovering the available data from customer accounts. Legere also addresses some of the controversy regarding video stream quality and claims in his comments that users are wasting bandwidth on high definition data on small screens, a claim he thinks is supported by news about Netflix downgrading video streams to only 360p.

Check out Legere’s comments in the video below and then hit the source link if you want additional details about these Uncarrier changes.

ARCHOS announces two new smartphones ahead of MWC 2016

ARCHOS_Diamond_2_Note

MWC 2016 will begin on Monday, but apparently ARCHOS can’t wait that long. The company just announced two new smartphones called the Diamond 2 Note and Diamond 2 Plus, both which feature some high-end specs.

The Diamond 2 Note, not the Diamond Note 2, is the larger of the duo at 6-inches. The display is of IPS LCD and has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 good for QHD. The recently launched MediaTek MT6795 Helio X10 processor is powering the device along with 3GB of RAM. On the back is a 16MP camera, and on the front is a lower-resolution 8MP camera. On the outside, the Diamond 2 Note features a metal design that is very pleasant to the eye.

The Diamond 2 Plus packs a smaller 5.5-inch display with a Full HD resolution. This is also an IPS LCD panel. This device runs an octa-core MediaTek MT6755 processor with 4GB of RAM. The back houses a 20.7MP camera from Sony, and the front houses an 8MP shooter. Both sides have their own flash. Like the Diamond 2 Note, the design is made of metal. However, this one contains a fingerprint scanner just below the rear camera lens. 64GB of internal memory is onboard and so is a USB Type-C port for charging, unlike the Diamond 2 Note which has a microUSB port.

Both devices run Marshmallow and will be showcased next week. Both phones will be priced in the $ 200 range at launch, which is scheduled for May.

LINE messaging app announces End-to-End Encryption feature

line_letter_sealing_banner

If you are looking for a messaging platform that can provide end-to-end encryption from a variety of platforms, you may want to check out LINE. The messaging client is receiving a new security feature called Letter Sealing that enables users to apply encryption on messages sent from the desktop as well as on the mobile client on both Android and iOS. LINE claims they are the first provider to offer this level of security combined with flexiblity to end users.

The Letter Sealing feature uses a key that is only available on user devices, not on a central server. This makes messages “technically impossible” to be cracked according to LINE. Initially Letter Sealing will be available for all chat sessions and for Location Sharing. However, LINE plans to expand the encryption to other features provided by their platform in the future.

LINE says Letter Sealing joins other security features of their app like Hidden Chat, time limited messaging, and a Passcode Lock to offer users a high level of security. You can get LINE from the Google Play Store using the link below. To take advantage of the new Letter Sealing feature, the app needs to be updated to at least version 5.3.0.
