Twitter appears to be blocking Google Voice numbers from SMS authentication
Twitter appears to have cut off Google Voice numbers from two-factor authentication (2FA). Although it's hardly the first company to block virtual phone numbers from SMS authentication, the change could be connected to CEO Elon Musk’s aggressive moves to snuff out bot accounts from the platform.
The new behavior, reported by 9to5Google, appears to block users from using a Google Voice number to authenticate their accounts. (I tried it today, and it rejected my Google Voice number.) Further, users previously authenticated with Google Voice could find themselves locked out of their accounts. Engadget reached out to Google to confirm, and we’ll update the story if we hear back. Twitter no longer has a PR department.
Since buying Twitter and taking over as CEO (a title he now says he’ll abandon once he finds a successor), Musk has been vocal about vanquishing bots from the platform. Earlier this month, Platformerreported the company blocked traffic from 30 mobile carriers worldwide — including networks in Russia, Indonesia, India and Malaysia. The move cut off access for thousands of accounts, including legitimate ones using those wireless carriers for 2FA. Musk accused the carriers of initiating the bogus texts to inflate what Twitter owed them contractually for SMS.
That report didn’t mention Google Voice, but anyone with a Gmail account can set up a free Google Voice number, making it an easy authentication tool for bots, scammers and spammers. Although it’s tempting to lump this move together with Musk’s seemingly erratic overhauls since taking over, it’s standard practice for apps ranging from financial institutions to dating apps to bar virtual numbers from 2FA.
If you set up your Twitter account with Google Voice authentication, you should be able to change the number without contacting support. You can go to Twitter Settings > Security and Account Access > Security > Two-Factor Authentication to remove that number and add your primary carrier line.

New Android-powered Acer model appears to be in the works
Acer isn’t known for their Android smartphones, but it appears that the company is working on one. The Jade Primo S58A was just tested on Geekbench running Android Marshmallow.
The Acer Jade Primo S58 is Windows 10 powered, which we could presume is where the Jade Primo S58A got its name from. The Android model is expected to include most of the same design elements and hardware specifications as its brother. The device ran through Geekbench not too long ago and posted a single-core score of 1133 and a multi-core score of 2957. As a result, there’s nothing to staggering here.
The reason this is important is because Acer hasn’t launched an Android model in quite some time. Other than the fact the device runs Marshmallow, the benchmark revealed a Snapdragon 808 processor and 3GB of RAM. These are the same specifications that its windows counterpart has. The Android model could be a sign that Acer is trying to get back into the Google ecosystem and run from Windows, which hasn’t given the company that much success when it comes to smartphones. It could also just be a backup in case the windows-oriented Jade Primo doesn’t reach the company’s expectations. Either way, I’m sure Android users won’t mind another mid-range offering.
The device could be released as early as MWC 2016, which is inching closer by the day. Let’s hope we hear more in the weeks ahead.

New Samsung Galaxy J1 appears on Twitter
Early 2016 is sounding like a probable time for Samsung to launch a new Galaxy J1. This will replace the old generation Galaxy J1 and include a bump-up in specs and a refreshed design.
Based on a recent Twitter leak, the Galaxy J1 SM-J120F will have a 4.5-inch display with a 480×800 pixel resolution. The device will be powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 3457 processor backed with 1GB of RAM. The leak also indicated that Android version 5.1.1 will be onboard. Last year’s Galaxy J1 was released in the first quarter, so we might catch a glimpse of the device as early as CES 2016. More details should be arriving soon, but for now, the most you can do is feast your eyes on the leaked image.
