The Morning After: The NSA announces new artificial intelligence security center
The National Security Agency (NSA) has launched a dedicated artificial intelligence security center. This apparently follows the increased government use of algorithms and AI systems, related to defense and intelligent systems. The security center aims to protect these systems from theft and sabotage, as well as safeguard the country from external AI-based threats.
The NSA’s outgoing director, General Paul Nakasone, says the division will operate within the existing Cybersecurity Collaboration Center. This entity works with private industry and international partners to protect the US from cyberattacks from China, Russia and other countries with active malware and hacking campaigns.
One reason we might hear more on defensive measures is the incoming US presidential election, although Nakasone said he’s not seen evidence of that just yet.

Your phone will blare a national emergency alert test on October 4 at 2:20 PM ET

The US government will conduct a nationwide alert test on Wednesday, October 4. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will send notifications to your phones (and radios and TVs) to test the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. If you live near a decent-sized metro area, there’s a solid chance you’ve received AMBER alerts through this system before. But you’re still going to be surprised.
Analogue’s limited edition Pockets are delightful and frustrating

With Cocoon, there’s no preamble, no text overlays and no overt hints. So, you walk around interacting with things that look like you can interact with them, scratching away at the game within. You’ll soon find an orb, which you can initially use to open doors, before discovering inside every orb is a new world of puzzles. I could oversimplify it and call it bug puzzle Inception, but it’s more satisfying than that.

NASA’s Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft returns to Kennedy Space Center
After completing its 1.4 million mile trip to the Moon and back at the start of last month, NASA’s Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft has returned to the Kennedy Space Center. The homecoming occurred on December 30th. Artemis 1 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on December 11th. After the USS Portland recovered the unmanned crew vehicle and brought it to Naval Base San Diego on December 13th, the capsule embarked on an overland trek to Florida the next day. Artemis 1’s record-breaking journey began on November 16th with a memorable nighttime launch atop NASA’s next-generation Space Launch System heavy-lift rocket.

Now that Orion is back at Kennedy Space Center, NASA will remove the spacecraft’s heat shield so that it can conduct an “extensive analysis” of the component and determine exactly how it fared during atmospheric reentry. The agency will also remove Moonikin Campos, the test dummy NASA sent aboard Orion to collect data on how travel to the Moon might affect humans. “Artemis I was a major step forward as part of NASA’s lunar exploration efforts and sets the stage for the next mission of the Space Launch System rocket and Orion to fly crew around the Moon on Artemis II,” NASA said.
While Artemis II won’t launch until 2024 at the earliest, there’s still a lot to look forward to between now and next year. NASA promised to announce the mission’s four-person crew sometime in “early 2023.” Artemis II will set the stage for the first human lunar landing since the end of the Apollo program in 1972, and eventually a permanent NASA presence on the Moon.

Huawei’s U.S. footprint to grow with new Seattle R&D center
In another sign that Huawei is continuing its march into the U.S. smartphone market, reports are out that the Chinese company is preparing to open a new engineering facility in Seattle to conduct research and development activities. Although the company is just reaching the point where they can open their own facility, Huawei already has about 40 employees working in the Seattle area and LinkedIn has several job openings listed. The new Huawei R&D center is expected to employee around 100 when fully operational in 2017.
Huawei will be joining companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter and Uber with a base of operations in the Seattle area. Sources think Huawei may be particularly interested in collaborating with Microsoft and Amazon, especially if they have employees in such close proximity to each other. Huawei just announced a new Windows 10 tablet at MWC 2016. In the future, they may look to Amazon for insight on global supply chain management.
Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu expects the company to continue to grow with a 30% increase in smartphone shipments during 2016. Huawei has already jumped into the top five in the global smartphone market and has their eyes on both Apple and Samsung in the next 2 to 5 years. Much of the past growth they experienced was done without benefit of a presence in the U.S. market. However, during 2015 they did manage to secure a partnership with Google to produce the Nexus 6P, a device that was well received in the market.
