YouTube to live stream Coachella Weekend 2 for the first time ever

For the first time ever, YouTube will keep the cameras rolling for Coachella Weekend 2 with the exclusive second weekend live stream of the festival! After a record-breaking Weekend 1 live stream earning over 82 million live views — an increase of over 90% compared to views in 2018 Weekend 2 will feature “Coachella Curated,” a new curated live stream of performances sponsored by Pantene & CALVIN KLEIN in the U.S., and Garnier and Coca-Cola in Canada. YouTube is making sure no one misses out on the action, bringing all of the “can’t miss” moments from the desert to music fans all over the world through the immersive live stream available to fans wherever they are.

First-Ever Weekend 2 Coachella Curated and Yuma Tent Live Streams (April 19-21)

Coachella Curated, hosted by Jason Bentley from KCRW, along with special guests, and available to live stream on Coachella’s YouTube Channel on any screen (desktop, mobile and living room) and within the YouTube Music app, will take a deep dive into the festival experience and deliver fans a slate of original content. Weekend 2’s curated live stream features select songs and performances from both weekends, artist interviews and commentary, mini-docs, animated adventures and more.

Coachella Curated trains its sights on artists from across the line-up and captures them both onstage and at home — spanning the globe to share stories from the homes of performers like Billie Eilish, Cola Boyy, Idris Elba, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Calypso Rose, Bob Moses, Mr Eazi, and Nina Kraviz. These traveling tales, filmed on six continents with festival founder Paul Tollett, offer a unique look at the international energy that comes together on the Empire Polo Grounds before beaming back out via YouTube.

Confirmed artists appearing in the Coachella Curated live stream display the diversity of talent taking the stage in Indio, from emerging artists Little Simz and Cola Boyy to headliner performers. The multi-genre musical menu also offers chart-toppers, such as Bad Bunny, Jaden Smith, Tame Impala, Billie Eilish, and SOFI TUKKER; festival favorites Bob Moses, Mac DeMarco and RÜFÜS DU SOL; and DJ heroes Dillon Francis, and Nina Kraviz. American acts Maggie Rogers, Khruangbin and Tierra Whack add female-fronted flavors of rock, pop, hip-hop and R&B, while international acts BLACKPINK, Los Tucanes De Tijuana, Calypso Rose, Christine and the Queens, Mr Eazi and Burna Boy showcase the borderless taste and boundary-less sounds of Coachella 2019.

Weekend 2 will also tap into the energy of the Yuma Tent, Coachella’s deep desert disco, broadcasting, for the first time, full DJ sets on a second dedicated channel. The Yuma stream will feature sets by Idris Elba, Guy Gerber, Nicole Moudaber, Deep Dish, Nocturnal Sunshine, and more.

LIVE TOMORROW: Tune into the BRIT Awards 2019, featuring George Ezra, Dua Lipa and Jorja Smith on YouTube

It’s that time of year again. With awards season in full swing, one of the most anticipated musical celebrations of the year has arrived: The BRITs. Known for its memorable performances such as Stormzy’s “Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2” in the rain and Liam Gallagher’s moving tribute to Manchester—plus top pop culture moments (Ginger Spice’s iconic Union Jack dress, anyone?)—the BRIT Awards are a celebration of UK musical talent on a global stage. And this year for the first time, YouTube Music is the Official Music App of the 2019 Awards and will provide one-of-a-kind access to the show for fans around the world.

For the sixth consecutive year, for those outside the UK, YouTube is letting you in on the action with a livestream of the show from the O2 Arena in London. Just tune in at youtube.com/BRITs on your favorite screen—whether that’s your mobile, tablet or TV—tomorrow, February 20 at 11:30 a.m. PT / 2:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. GMT. Following the show, no matter your location, you can watch and rewatch the performances on YouTube Music.

Adding to tomorrow’s excitement, YouTube star and global sensation, Todrick Hall, who has 2.9 million subscribers, will present the YouTube Livestream, giving people outside the UK incredible behind-the-scenes access from the show, while providing a front row seat to the drama, gossip, and artist interactions. Vick Hope will join Hall as co-host; and once the show is over, they will continue broadcasting an everyone’s-invited Official After Party on YouTube, recapping the biggest moments from the night.

This year, nominated stars like George Ezra, Dua Lipa, The 1975, Little Mix and Jorja Smith—who either got their start on YouTube, launched albums on the platform, or have used it to grow their fanbases to a global level—are set to perform. Be sure to tune in to see their show-stopping, on-stage renditions of their beloved hits.

For the second year running, comedian Jack Whitehall will be bringing his brilliant jokes and outrageous capers as the event’s host to make the night one you’ll never forget. After all, what could be better than a mix of top-rated musical talent and hilarious antics to make for an unforgettable night?

And as a special treat for Londoners who didn’t score tickets to the O2: select winners from the night will be projected gloriously onto County Hall and Old Billingsgate to make for a magical, one-of-a-kind YouTube Music moment atop the Thames. There will also be a chance to see your favorite nominees and winners celebrated on billboards throughout the country, and YouTube adverts showcasing the official BRITs content on the YouTube Music App.

Geoff Taylor, Chief Executive of BPI & BRIT Awards said, “The BRIT Awards is the most spectacular night in music, showcasing the exceptional talent of a diverse range of British artists at home and around the world. We have seen tremendous growth in the digital and social reach of the BRITs, and partnering with YouTube once again for our live stream of the show enables us to introduce British music to a global audience that is growing all the time.”

And in case you missed it, after the show you’ll find performances from the artists on a special, exclusive YouTube Music BRITs playlist. But for those who want to enjoy the BRIT Awards LIVE—don’t forget to tune in at youtube.com/BRITs on February 20 at 11:30 a.m. PT / 2:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. GMT.

YouTube makes it simple for fans to experience live performances with Eventbrite

Over 1 billion fans come to YouTube each month to connect with their favorite artists and discover new music. Thanks to a new partnership with Eventbrite, we’re making it simple for fans to go from experiencing music online to seeing live performances.

Starting today, fans watching videos from YouTube Official Artist Channels will see Eventbrite listings for live music performances throughout the U.S. below the video. With one easy click on the “Tickets” button, they’ll be able to purchase directly from Eventbrite.

Live events continue to be a major source of revenue for artists, so we want to help artists keep fans updated on their upcoming shows and sell more tickets to live performances. YouTube’s global audience also lets artists find new fans with 26% of Millenials (44% of teens) claiming they discover live music events on YouTube, according to Nielsen.

Through our partnerships with Eventbrite and Ticketmaster, YouTube now covers more than 70% of the US ticketing market and we’ll continue to add new artists and venues of all sizes to our list in North America as well as expand globally.

We’re excited to further the power of video discovery on Youtube to bring artists and fans together and continue supporting those connections through live shows.

Updates to YouTube Live streaming

Together, we’ve experienced the biggest music, sports, science, culture and gaming events unfold live on YouTube. Now we’re introducing more ways to watch live videos and interact with your community in real time.

Catching up on the latest

Live chat plays a key role in creating connections between creators and their community. Today we are starting to roll out chat replay to YouTube, so you can follow the conversation even after a live stream is over. Live chat replays will show up alongside the video, exactly as it appeared live.

Making live streams more accessible

We launched automatic captions back in 2009, and since then, we’ve auto-captioned a staggering 1 billion videos. We’re now bringing English automatic captions to live streams.

When professionally provided captions aren’t available, our new live automatic captions provide creators a quick and inexpensive way to make live streams accessible to more people. With our live automatic speech recognition (LASR) technology, you’ll get captions with error rates and latency approaching industry standards. We’ll roll this out in the coming weeks, and will continue to improve accuracy and latency of automatic captions.

More fun features for live streamers

Creators can now add a location tag to their mobile live streams and video uploads and share all their favorite hot spots with viewers. You can explore other videos with the same location tag by simply clicking on it. You can also use the location filter on the search results page to find other videos from a specific spot.

Last year, we introduced a way for Super Chats to trigger real life events. Now creators can set this up for their channels using IFTTT (If This, Then That). Over 600 internet-connected services and devices (like lights, pet feeders and confetti cannons!) can be connected to Super Chat. Super Chat is already available on desktop and Android devices, with support for iOS devices rolling out starting today.

With live streams, you’ve found more intimate and spontaneous ways to share your thoughts, lives, and creativity. Take these features for a spin and show us your world!

Since February 10, 2017, Animal Adventure, an educational animal park in New York, has been livestreaming April’s pregnancy and creating a social media sensation with fans all over the world tuning in regularly to check on her progress. One industrious fan created an app to crowdsource pregnancy updates from tens of thousands of other fans following the livestream. A pregnant woman even parodied April’s livestream, becoming an internet sensation in her own right. Waiting for April to give birth became an experience shared around the world.

As the anticipation and audience grew leading up to the big moment,Animal Adventure Park became the second most live-viewed channel in the history of YouTube despite launching a mere 66 days ago. Here are the highlights of April and her baby bump:

  • Over 232 million live views and 7.6 billion minutes of live watch-time total.
  • The livestreams became daily programming for millions, with an average time watched of more than 30 minutes across an average of 3.5 million views per day.
  • Saturday, the day of the birth, was the channel’s biggest day, surging to over 14 million live views.
  • More than 1.2 million viewers were watching the livestream simultaneously at 6:55 a.m. PST on Saturday, a peak that ranked as one of the top five most-watched moments for a live event ever on YouTube.

Giraffes already hold the record for being the tallest land animals in the world, but here are some other records April set this weekend:

  • Animal Adventure Park became the fifth fastest channel to 200 million views, achieving the feat in only 54 days (behind notable celebrity non-giraffes Lady Gaga and Zayn).
  • It’s one of only seven channels to eclipse 100 million live views so far and the fastest to do so of any channel.
  • Fans have been connecting with Animal Adventure Park’s staff too through live chat. The channel received over 4,400 Super Chat messages, making them now the second highest Super Chat earner by revenue.

But April wasn’t just the star of a popular stream; she sparked a pop culture phenomenon, with YouTube creators and fans posting videos of their own that were watched over 48.7 million times, including day-by-day analysis of pregnancy signs, baby showers, and anxious messages about the wait.

We’ve seen some of the biggest events in music, sports, politics, and gaming play out on YouTube over the years. Thanks to one endearing mother giraffe, we’ll have to add animal events to that list now too.

YouTube TV is now live

We love TV. We love the shows, live sports, and can’t-miss events that drive our FOMO and need for #spoileralerts. But while what we watch on TV seems to get better every year, the way we watch TV never seems to change. How long do we have to wait until we can watch live TV on the go, on all our devices? When will we have DVRs big enough to handle all the things we want to record? And when will we be able to get the channels we care about, at a price we can afford, without all the commitments, equipment fees, and hassle?

The answer? Today.

Finally, live TV made for us. YouTube TV is here.

Today, we’re launching YouTube TV in the nation’s largest metro areas—New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, and Philadelphia—with more U.S. markets coming soon. A YouTube TV membership is only $ 35 a month, less than half the average cost of cable. And there are no commitments; you can cancel anytime.

We can’t wait for you to experience YouTube TV for yourself, so we’re giving you a free one month trial. We’ll also give you a complimentary Google Chromecast after your first month’s payment, while supplies last.

With a YouTube TV membership, you’ll get:

  • Live TV streaming from ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, Fox Sports Networks, Comcast SportsNet and dozens more. YouTube TV gives you the best of live TV, from must-see shows like “Empire,” “The Voice,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Scandal,” to the live sports you want from the NBA, MLB, NFL, and NCAA. Based on where you live, you’ll get your local broadcast TV stations covering local sports and news. You’ll also get dozens of popular cable channels, including FX, USA, Disney Channel, Bravo, MSNBC, Fox News. And you can add Showtime or Fox Soccer Plus for an additional charge. In total, YouTube TV will give you more than 50 networks, listed below.
  • A cloud DVR, with no storage limits. With YouTube TV, your cloud DVR can record as many shows as you want, simultaneously, without ever running out of storage. You can keep each of your recordings for nine months.

Finally, live TV made for you

There’s no question that people love TV, from live sports to breaking news to sitcoms and dramas. But the truth is, there are a lot of limitations in how to watch TV today. Unlike online video, people can’t watch TV when they want, on any screen and on their terms, without commitments. Consumers have made it clear that they want live TV without all the hassle. They don’t want to worry about their DVR filling up. They don’t want to miss a great game or their favorite show because they’re on the go. They tell us they want TV to be more like YouTube.

Well, we’ve got some good news! We’re bringing the best of the YouTube experience to live TV. To do this, we’ve worked closely with our network and affiliate partners to evolve TV for the way we watch today.

Meet YouTube TV. It’s live TV designed for the YouTube generation—those who want to watch what they want, when they want, how they want, without commitments.

Here’s what YouTube TV offers:

  • Live TV streaming from ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, regional sports networks and dozens of popular cable networks. YouTube TV gives you the best of live TV, from must-see broadcast shows like “Empire,” “The Voice,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Scandal,” to the live sports you want. YouTube TV includes major sports networks like ESPN and regional sports networks like Fox Sports Networks and Comcast SportsNet, so you can watch your favorite NBA or MLB teams. We’ve also partnered with local TV stations, so you’ll also get sports and local news based on where you live. And YouTube TV offers dozens of additional cable channels, so you won’t miss out on the latest news from MSNBC or Fox News, popular shows and movies from USA or FX, kids programming from the Disney Channel or Sprout, or reality TV from E! or Bravo. You can also add Showtime, or Fox Soccer Plus to your networks for an additional charge. In total, YouTube TV gives you access to more than 40 networks, listed below.
  • A cloud DVR, with no storage limits. With YouTube TV, you’ll be able to record live TV and never run out of storage. Your cloud DVR can record as many shows as you want, simultaneously, without using precious data or space on your phone and we’ll store each of your recordings for nine months.
  • A service that works great on all your screens. You can watch YouTube TV on any screen—mobile, tablet or computer—and you can easily stream to your TV with a Google Chromecast or Chromecast built-in TV. YouTube TV works on both Android and iOS. And your cloud DVR goes with you, so you can stream your recordings on any device, whenever and wherever you want.
  • YouTube Red Originals. With a YouTube TV membership, you can watch all of our YouTube Red Original series and movies right on the new YouTube TV app.
  • Six accounts, one price. Every YouTube TV membership comes with six accounts, each with its own unique recommendations and personal DVR with no storage limits. You can watch up to three concurrent streams at a time.

YouTube TV will be available soon in the largest U.S. markets and will quickly expand to cover more cities across the country. Visit tv.youtube.com and sign up to find out when we’ll launch in your market.

With so much great content available on TV, we’re thrilled to build an experience that lets you enjoy it as easily as you watch YouTube. We can’t wait for you to tune in.

Tune in and turn it up: Watch the BRITs feat. Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Skepta and Little Mix LIVE on YouTube

What do Madonna, Liam Gallagher and Robbie Williams have in common? They all made a scene (and global headlines) at the BRITs. The BRIT Awards with MasterCard has given us some of the most memorable moments in music history. Scrap that, in pop culture history. So it is with some joy that we are able to bring you all of this year’s action LIVE on YouTube. For the fourth year running, you can watch the full show live in fabulous, star-studded, rock ’n’ rolling glory if you’re based outside of Great Britain (and if you’re based in GB, catch up on performances after the show). Just tune in at youtube.com/Brits on whatever screen you find yourself closest to: mobile, tablet or TV.

Famous YouTube funnyman Caspar Lee will bring you top gossip from the event on the official BRITs channel. And just who might Caspar be rubbing shoulders with? ROYALTY. Pop royalty, that’s who. This year’s bill is topped by Brit legends and international superstars and includes performances from Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Robbie Williams, Emeli Sandé, Little Mix, The 1975 and U.K. sensation Skepta. And given it’s the BRITs, you just know there’s going to be a whole lot more magic beyond the awards and performances themselves.

As Geoff Taylor, Chief Exec of The BPI and BRIT Awards says: “It’s really exciting for us that so many people around the world will get the chance to celebrate the U.K.’s biggest night in music live as it happens.” Well said, Geoff, couldn’t agree more.

After the live show, you’ll find performances from the artists on their own YouTube channels for you to relive again and again, plus there will be catch-up content on the BRITs channel itself. So, tune in to the official BRITs channel on February 22 at 2.30 p.m. ET and enjoy yourselves a Britpop bonanza.

Mobile Live Streaming + Super Chat = Live (Streaming) the Dream

A huge focus for us here at YouTube is to find new ways to let creators and viewers interact with each other and the videos they watch. And that’s why we’ve supported live streaming since, well, before Beyoncé even had a baby – way back in 2011! And in 2016, we witnessed the most-viewed political live streams of all time – the 2016 U.S. presidential debates – and we launched the world’s first 360-degree live streaming support with full 4K video, at scale and for free.

So what’s next? The roll out of our new mobile live streaming feature to every creator with more than 10,000 subscribers (the rest of you will have it soon!). It’s a launch that’ll put the power of live streaming in the hands of hundreds of thousands of talented creators, giving them a more intimate and spontaneous way to share their thoughts, lives, and creativity.

Mobile live streaming has been built directly into the YouTube mobile app. All you have to do to start streaming is open YouTube, hit the capture button, and you’re live! Streamed videos will have all the same features as regular YouTube videos. They can be searched for, found via recommendations or playlists, and protected from unauthorized use. Our mobile live streaming uses YouTube’s rock-solid infrastructure, meaning it’ll be fast and reliable, just the YouTube you know and love. And we’ve been working hand-in-hand with hundreds of creators to refine the mobile streaming experience while they stream from a boat or take live calls from their fans. Based on their feedback, we did things like slowing down live chat (it turns out receiving 2,000 messages per second is a little too fast!) and pushing for better streaming quality across devices.

Show me the money

To help creators earn revenue from live streaming, we’re also excited to launch Super Chat, a new live stream monetization tool available to creators in more than 20 countries (and viewers in more than 40 countries). Super Chat is like paying for that front-row seat in the digital age: it lets any fan watching a live stream stand out from the crowd and get a creator’s attention by purchasing chat messages that are highlighted in bright colors and stay pinned to the top of the chat window for up to five hours. Super Chat gives viewers a chance to add a little visual flair to their chats and gives creators a new way to keep connected to their fans while earning a little money on the side, let’s say for example, while shopping at Target or playing video games 🙂

4K live streaming: Live has never looked so good

Back in 2010, we enabled 4K video support for the very first time. Since then, millions of videos have been uploaded at that eye-popping resolution, making YouTube’s the largest library of 4K videos online. Today, we’re proud to say that we’re taking 4K video one step further with the launch of 4K live streaming for both 360-degree videos and standard videos.

Supporting this new format will let creators and partners stream incredibly high-resolution video, and let viewers enjoy the clearest picture possible when watching a live stream on 4K-supported devices. The image quality is just mind-blowing on screens that support it, and in 360 degrees … the clarity can truly transport you. If you want to experience it for yourself, make sure to check out the Game Awards tomorrow, December 1 at 9 p.m. EST / 6 p.m. PST on YouTube. The entire show will be live streamed in 4K resolution.

4K video isn’t just a little different from HD video; it’s a giant leap. It shows 8 MILLION pixels total, with an image that has four times more image definition than even 1080p video. What does this mean in real world terms? Live streams look better, show a more detailed, crisper picture, and aren’t as blurry when there’s fast action on screen. Basically, 4K makes everything better to look at. And because we support 4K at up to 60 frames per second, creators can make content that looks silky smooth, and more realistic than ever before.

For creators this means the ability to take advantage of an incredibly clear picture for recorded and now streaming video. It’s the kind of thing that can help to push their hardware (and their talent) to create the most beautiful or just plain crazy-looking images and videos possible. And with 360 4K live streams, the sky is (literally) the limit. Get ready for 360 concert and event streams that look sharper, cleaner, and brighter than ever before. If you want more information on how to stream in 4K, just check out this Help Center article.

Today’s an exciting day, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience the beauty of 4K live streams from their favorite creators.
