Google Wallet can now automatically add your movie tickets and boarding passes

An update to Google Wallet has further simplified the process of getting all your passes in one place. Per this week’s release notes for Wallet, spotted by Android reporter Mishaal Rahman, Google says movie tickets and boarding passes will now be surfaced automatically after purchase, as long as the confirmation email has made it to the user’s Gmail inbox. It might not work for every theater chain or airline just yet, but Google says the feature is live for “some” and more should be added in time.

Google little by little has been tweaking Wallet to make it more useful. The company last month expanded Wallet passes to WearOS so Android smartwatch users could have easy access to their tickets from their wrist. That includes boarding passes, event tickets, gym memberships, loyalty cards and more. Per the latest release notes, Google has also added a way for users to manually archive most of their passes from either their smartphone or smartwatch. These will be moved to a section called Archived Passes, where users will be able to undo the action if they’ve made a mistake or need to refer to an old pass.

Apple Pay, Apple Card and Wallet are facing outages

Apple’s financial services, including Apple Pay, Apple Cash, Apple Card and Wallet, have been experiencing service disruptions for some users since 6:15AM this morning, the company reports. As of 10:04AM Eastern, those services still have outage notices on Apple’s System Status page. As AppleInsider notes, it’s unclear how widespread the issues are, but the company has experienced intermittent Apple Pay issues earlier this year.

On a personal note, I was able to use Apple Pay without issue around 9AM to make a pick-up order at Starbucks. After launching in 2014, it took a while for Apple Pay (and other contactless payments options) to reach widespread support in the US. These days you can tap your phone or Apple Watch to pay at most major retailers (except for Home Depot, for some reason). Depending on how long this outage lasts, Apple may end up losing some consumer trust as they have to dig out their credit cards, or, God forbid, cash to grab their morning lattes.

Google may soon be saying goodbye to the physical Google Wallet card

Google Wallet isn’t going away, but the physical card you could request might. Text from an upcoming app update shows that the card may lose support by June 30. You would still be able to activate cards and add money until May 1.

Your physical Google Wallet card is going to stop working soon

Google WalletOne of the unique features of Google Wallet was its ability to attach to a physical card in addition to the digital wallet. You had an account within Google Wallet that you could put money in, then use that physical card if somewhere didn’t accept NFC payments.

Hopefully you weren’t too invested in that physical card, as it looks like Google is going to phase it out sooner rather than later.

Some information inside of the APK for Wallet suggests that on June 30th, the Wallet card will no longer be supported. It makes sense from Google’s point of view, since the card was nothing more than a glorified prepaid account. It obviously didn’t make waves outside of early adopters, and now that Google’s focus is on Android Pay and contactless payments, it was hard to see that card lasting much longer.

Google Wallet as a service isn’t going away, so there’s no need to be worried about that. You can still send and receive money through the app, and you’ll be able to withdraw any money that’s currently stored in it. After the cutoff date, you just won’t be able to add any more money for storing or activate new cards.

Maybe they’ll be worth some money on eBay a few years down the line.
