Some carrier Priv units begin to receive the March security patch update

blackberry_priv_guy_smiling

Earlier this month, BlackBerry pushed their March update containing all the latest security patches to the Priv smartphone. According to sources, some carrier units have begun receiving the update.

While unlocked BlackBerry Priv units received the update a few weeks ago, some carrier variants are just beginning to receive it now. Some users on AT&T and T-Mobile have reported the arrival of the update on their Priv smartphone. Unfortunately, both carriers are yet to speak out about what has been fixed with the update, but one can assume that most of which is posted on BlackBerry’s site will be included. This will be liked below the article.

The update contains no major release, therefore it shouldn’t take up too much space. However, we still recommend charging your device and connected to a nearby Wi-Fi network before beginning the installation process. BlackBerry has taken updates with all seriousness since they began their transition to the Android ecosystem, let’s just hope it continues.

Huawei rolls out February security update for the Mate 8

Huawei_Mate8 (2)

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has been making good on its promise to distribute Google’s monthly security updates for its flagship smartphones, and today has started rolling out February’s patches for the Mate 8. This upgrade’s objective is to fix a multitude of “critical bugs” present in the open-source operating system, which, if not dealt with, could have permitted devices to be remotely accessed by a simple text message. It also addresses users concerns regarding privilege escalation as it plasters over any previous holes exposing the resources that had the facility to brick a handset if tampered with.

As usual, the update is being distributed in stages. All unlocked Mate 8 units should receive the update within the next few days, whilst carrier-branded variants are expected to get it sometime next week — so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for that push notification prompting you to download and install the update. It’s worth noting, however, as this is a relatively large piece of firmware,  you’ll probably want to connect to a Wi-Fi network prior to pulling it from the servers in order to ensure you don’t run over your data allotment and rack up a nasty bill with your service provider.

ZTE’s Axon and Axon Pro get camera improvements, security patches, and more

zte_axon_camera_flash_closeup_TA

On Wednesday, ZTE started rolling out a software update to two flagship devices sold in the United States. The Axon and Axon Pro (reviewed here) are getting improvements to their cameras, security patches from Google, and better wireless signals.

zte_axon_pro_software_update_december_2015

Included in the software update is T-Mobile’s WiFi calling, a quick launch button for the camera, faster focus and improved white balance, improved camera zooming, Google-issued security patches, Qualcomm-issued modem patches, and the ability to use MetroPCS as an APN. Not every item, though, is eligible for both the Axon and Axon Pro. The WiFi calling and camera quality updates are only for the Axon Pro while the Axon’s camera gets better zooming. The remaining updates are for both phones.

ZTE has not specified the size of either phone’s update, but both come with at least 32GB of internal storage. And nothing here is particularly substantial. The same probably won’t be said when ZTE rolls out Marshmallow for its Axon devices.
