Today’s Instagram update contains just small cosmetic changes

Earlier today, Instagram started pushing out a small update to users of its Android app. It includes just two small cosmetic changes that the average probably won’t even notice.

Notice anything?

If nothing jumped out from the screenshot above, I’ll just tell you what Instagram changed:

  • Icon for Instagram Direct, the feature that allows direct messaging between users, now sits within a circle of a lighter shade of blue
  • Timestamps have moved from the top of posts to beneath the comments section

In 2016, Instagram has been pretty active pushing out little updates like today’s in addition to implementing new features. Multi-account support came in February and Instagram started showing video views days shortly after. Then Instagram brought in two-factor authentication to enhance security for users worldwide.

Instagram actually started the year by hiring Twitter’s Kevin Weil as its Head of Product. Since then, the Facebook-owned service began cracking down on users who promote other social media profiles on Instagram.

Instagram adding multi-account support to Android app

Instagram users who need to manage multiple accounts will be happy to hear that the social network platform is finally adding the ability to switch between multiple accounts without first logging out. The update is included in a new version, number 7.12.0 that is starting to rollout to some users, although the new feature is not showing up for everyone with this update, so a server side change may also be necessary.

The initial addition of an account is achieved via a new menu entry on the Settings page of the app, where users can access a menu to either add an existing account or create a new one from scratch. Once a second account is added, users can switch between the accounts by tapping on the username and using a drop down selector accessed on the profile page. Testing indicates Instagram displays a toast message to let users know they have successfully switched accounts.

If you want to check for the availability of this new feature, you can download the apk below and hope that your account is one of the accounts that Instagram added this new function to.

Instagram adding several new features to Instagram Direct

instagram directInstagram Direct is the social media site’s way of directly sharing content with friends and family, and it’s been a success for the site since it launched a few years back. Today, Direct is getting some new features to make it even better, including threaded messaging and a way to share photos and videos on your feed straight to specific people.

The threaded messaging feature makes Instagram Direct work pretty similarly to text messaging and group messaging. The threads will follow conversations depending on which people are in the conversation, and you can name groups and quickly share things through a dedicated camera button and emoji sticker button.

Instagram is also pushing the sharing aspect of the site, adding a share button directly to posts next to the comment and like button. This will let you send content to direct messages and groups, and is designed to skip the step of mentioning someone in an Instagram comment.

Privacy hasn’t changed with these new features, so anything you share directly will only be seen by whoever you specify, and the photos and videos will only be visible to people that could already see the content normally, so you won’t be able to circumvent private accounts this way.
