YouTube Go: YouTube reimagined for the next generation of YouTube viewers

Earlier this year, I had the chance to travel to India to see how people there were enjoying YouTube up close. While in Nagpur, I met a young man who loved using YouTube to watch WWE wrestling and wanted to show us his favorite video. But after he found it and tapped to play, the video just wouldn’t load. Maybe it was his phone or his 2G connection, but it just wouldn’t work.

Unfortunately, this story isn’t an exception for our Indian viewers. They love YouTube and its amazing selection of Bollywood hits, comedy vlogs, cricket matches and—yes—even wrestling. But even as they discover the joys of YouTube, their experience is not great on slower connections and less powerful mobile phones.

We’ve always believed that connectivity should not be a barrier to watching YouTube. In 2014 we launched YouTube Offline so you could watch videos without suffering from buffering. A few months ago we rolled out Smart Offline, a feature that allows you to schedule videos to be saved offline later at off-peak times, when there’s more bandwidth so data is faster and cheaper. But we realized that for the next generation of YouTube users to fully discover all that YouTube has to offer, we had to reimagine the YouTube mobile app from the ground up.

That’s why I and a team of engineers, designers, and researchers have been travelling to India, collecting ideas and testing prototypes with hundreds of people across 15 cities. They’ve helped us build a brand new YouTube app that’s faster, more relevant, and more affordable, with innovative new features.

Meet YouTube Go: a new YouTube app built from scratch to bring YouTube to the next generation of viewers. YouTube Go is designed with four concepts in mind. It’s relatablewith video recommendations and a user interface that is made for you. The app is designed to be offline first and work even when there’s low or no connectivity. It’s also cost-effective, providing transparency and reducing data usage. And finally, it’s a social experience, connecting you with the people and content you care about.

The new preview function shows you what to expect before choosing to save or play the video, and in which resolution. You can also share videos to friends nearby, without using up any data.

Here are some of YouTube Go’s most notable features:

  • Find and discover relatable videos right on the home screen: YouTube Go homescreen features trending and popular videos in your area, so that you’ll find and fall in love with new videos that you and your community care about.
  • Preview videos before you save or watch: Not sure if you want to watch the video? On YouTube Go when you tap on a thumbnail, it’ll trigger a quick preview of the video, giving you a better sense of what the video is about before you decide to save or play it.
  • Choose your resolution when saving or streaming videos: Whether you’d like to save a video for offline viewing later, or stream it now, you can see and choose the amount of data you’d like to spend on that video.
  • Share videos with friends nearby: Share videos with friends and family nearby without using any data. You can send and receive videos instantly and offline with others using the YouTube Go app.

We’ll gradually roll out YouTube Go to more and more people over the next few months, getting their feedback and improving the product before launching it widely early next year. If you’d like to be among the first to find out when the app is ready, you can sign up at youtubego.com/signup.

We’re thrilled to bring YouTube Go to India … ab Mazze udao, data nahin!

Highlights from tonight’s YouTube Brandcast event: What’s next for Google Preferred

Tonight, YouTube hosted our fifth annual Brandcast in New York, our digital Newfronts event, where we showcase the best of YouTube to advertisers and agencies. With a little help from Big Bird, the Whip Nae Nae, and Sia, we showed that YouTube is where the world chooses to watch: on mobile alone, we now reach more 18-49 year-olds in the U.S. than any broadcast or cable TV network.1

As a result, our influence is greater than ever. In fact, nearly 60 percent of YouTube subscribers say they’d follow a YouTube creator’s advice on what to buy over that of their favorite TV or movie star. And the influence of YouTube stars continues to grow—last year, 6 in 10 of the most influential celebrities among teens were YouTubers, and this year that number jumped to 8 in 10.

To help brands capture some of this momentum, we have a premium content offering called Google Preferred that features creators like Lilly Singh, sWooZie and Laura Vitale. Organized into 13 lineup categories—including Comedy, Music, and Food & Recipes—Google Preferred is easy to buy and gives advertisers access to the most-loved and most-watched content on YouTube. In fact, Google Preferred reaches more people in the U.S. on mobile than all full episode players combined.2 And, we announced at Brandcast that Google Preferred just got better. Here’s how:

1. More Can’t-Miss Moments With Google Preferred Breakout Videos

Pop culture moments like the Harlem Shake and Let It Go are as unexpected as they are popular. While Google Preferred gives brands access to established creator channels, our new Breakout Videos offering lets them advertise on emerging content—the hottest and fastest-rising videos on YouTube. With the launch of Google Preferred Breakout Videos in the U.S., brands can be there alongside the next breakout star.

2. More Ease and Relevance with Programmatic Guaranteed for Google Preferred

To make it even easier to be there in the moment viewers are watching, upfront buyers will soon be able to execute their Google Preferred—and Breakout Videos—buy programmatically through DoubleClick Bid Manager. This means all video campaigns (including TrueView, Google Preferred, and cross-exchange) can be managed in one place.

3. More Sports Fans With NBA Highlights on Google Preferred

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also took to the Brandcast stage to announce that NBA inventory is now part of Google Preferred. Top NBA highlights will surface in Google Search and on YouTube, offering brands access to the NBA’s loyal fan base across screens. In addition, the NBA will soon launch two new VR series on YouTube that give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at team arenas and their favorite players.

4. More Great Results for Brands

With new additions like Breakout Videos, Programmatic Guaranteed, and NBA highlights, Google Preferred will keep delivering massive reach, and strong results for brands.

Already this year, among the Google Preferred campaigns we measured, 75 percent drove lifts in consideration3 and 61 percent drove lifts in favorability.4 Google Preferred is driving results later in the consumer journey, too: it raised purchase intent in two-thirds of campaigns.5

Results like these have encouraged nearly twice the number of brands in the U.S. to take advantage of Google Preferred in the last year.6

Chime in with your Google Preferred questions and comments on #Brandcast, and check out six questions every brand should consider after Brandcast. We’ll post even more content after the show on the Brandcast website.

Unlocked edition of the HTC 10 ships next week

htc_10_top_camera_closeup

Anyone from the United States and United Kingdom who pre-ordered the unlocked edition of HTC 10 will be happy to know that the company intends to ship the phone next week.

Jeff Gordon, HTC’s Senior Global Online Communications Manager, responded to inquiries regarding the shipping date for its new flagship. The unlocked edition of the HTC 10, at least in the United States and United Kingdom, should be shipping the week of May 2. This follows the acceptance of pre-orders on April 14, which is the same day HTC announced the phone.

Buying options through carriers in the United States is a little tough because of exclusivity and limited availability. Verizon is the exclusive seller of the HTC 10 until May 13 when Sprint starts offering the phone online and in retailer stores. We’re still waiting for T-Mobile to give a specific date along with pricing, but AT&T already stated it will not be selling the HTC 10 to its consumers. It’s not a favorable situation for a company in need product to get in the hands of millions, While the phone itself is really good, availability is a letdown.

HTC’s unlocked edition of its flagship works on any GSM network; therefore, AT&T and T-Mobile customers can get the HTC 10 right away.

LG V10 on T-Mobile to get Marshmallow update next week

lg_v10_company_logo_TA

According to a new post on Twitter from Des Smith, a product manager with T-Mobile, the carrier will be rolling out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to the LG V10 starting next week. This comes a little more than two months after T-Mobile started the upgrade process to Marshmallow for last year’s flagship, the LG G4. Since then, LG also released their newest flagship device, the LG G5.

No details were shared about what the upgrade may include outside of the normal Marshmallow features and updates like Doze, Now On Tap, and the changes to app permissions. Since the LG UI on the LG V10 was essentially the same as what came on the LG G4, this upgrade should be similar. The one thing that is different is the second screen that LG makes available on the LG V10, but owners who received the Marshmallow update on their LG V10 with other carriers have not noted any issues.

Did a next generation Google Glass unit get posted to eBay?

google_glass_reboot_ebay_01

A new listing on eBay appears to be for the next version of Google Glass rumored to be the successor to Google’s failed effort to create a consumer-oriented face-worn wearable device. When Google finally shutdown the old Google Glass program, there was talk then and in ensuing months about a business or enterprise focused version that would eventually be produced. The new eBay listing appears to show a device somewhat consistent with past rumors if it is indeed a legitimate listing.

The item itself merely indicates it is for a pair of Google Glass in black. No specifications are provided. However, one item that stands out in the pictures is the presence of hinges in the frames that would enable the unit to be folded and stowed a little bit easier. The ability to fold the frames was alleged to be one of the weaknesses from the first round that Google was going to address. The hinges in the eBay listing appear to be consistent with a unit spotted in an FCC filing from last year. The old style pouch that came with non-folding Google Glass units does not seem to be consistent with folding frames though.

The main unit itself appears to be a bit more streamlined than the original versions of Google Glass. Also apparent is a change in the charging hardware as a magnetic connector is present for the USB cable instead of a traditional microUSB slot common to many electronic devices. We can also see in one of the images the Glass logo despite some claims that Google was going to drop the name.

In addition to the questions that will arise as to authenticity, assuming this is an actual working unit, its presence on eBay raises some questions. This could be a listing by a rogue tester who is in violation of some agreements to keep things confidential, in which case they will probably be in some hot water and the listing will be pulled soon. Another possibility is that this is an older prototype and Google has moved on to other revisions and someone is just decluttering their bin of gadgetry.

Recently Google began purging itself of some Glass related social media accounts. Despite claims to the contrary, Google could be shutting down the whole effort to produce something like Google Glass even for enterprise and business users. If so, the testers may be tossing leftover hardware while they move on to other projects.

Do you think this is a legitimate set of Google Glass and if so, what do you think it means for the program?

LG’s new Nexus phone might arrive next month

Nexus devices typically launch in November, a time that coincides with the release of a new version of Android. This year, however, the wait may not be so long.
